RENZO IMBENI SUMMER SCHOOL
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
ART. 1 – CONTENT OF THE CALL
The City of Modena, in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the Fondazione Collegio San Carlo of Modena, organizes the “Renzo Imbeni Summer School”, an advanced training program designed for holders of a Master's degree (or equivalent qualifications) offering an in-depth academic training on the European Union. Through this program, the City of Modena seeks to honor the memory of Renzo Imbeni, distinguished citizen of Modena and former Vice-President of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2004.
The 2025 edition of the Renzo Imbeni Summer School is entitled “Europa 2025: from Utopia to Imperative”. Participation in the program is contingent upon a selection procedure, carried out in accordance with the provisions set forth in this call for applications. Participation to the course is limited to a maximum of 30 participants, including 9 graduates of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and at least 5 non-Italian nationals, as further detailed in Art. 2.
Lectures will be delivered in both Italian and English; no interpretation services will be provided. The full course program is available at https://www.comune.modena.it/summer-school.
The Summer School takes place under the Patronage of the Representation of the European Commission to Italy, and the High Patronage of the European Parliament. The course is organized in collaboration with the Italian Council of the European Movement, the Institute of International Affairs (Istituto Affari Internazionali), and made possible thanks to the financial support of the Fondazione di Modena.
ART. 2 – ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The call for applications is open to citizens of the European Union and of candidate countries, who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent certification) awarded no more than 36 months prior to the deadline of this call. Such qualification must have been obtained from a University established in a EU Member State or in a EU candidate country.
Applicants are required to hold a degree, as specified above, in the fields of: economics, law, socio-political sciences, humanities and literature. Their academic curriculum must include the successful completion of examinations in at least one of the following disciplines: European Union law and/or international law; languages and cultures of the European Union Member States; history and/or economics of European integration.
Candidates must have a level of knowledge of Italian and English equal or superior to the B1 level, as defined by the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe.
The above requirements, if not otherwise specified, shall be met at the expiry date of this call for applications.
ART. 3 – APPLICATION
All documents required for the application are available at: https://www.comune.modena.it/summer-school.
To be eligible for admission, candidates must:
- Complete the official online application form, available in Italian or English;
- Attach a copy of a valid identity document;
- Attach a Europass-format CV, duly signed and dated;
- Attach a cover letter (of 2,000 characters maximum, excluding spaces) to be evaluated by the Scientific Committee.
Failure to submit any of the aforementioned documents, or incomplete completion thereof, will result in automatic exclusion from the selection process.
According to the Italian law D.P.R.445/2000, the selection committee reserves the right to verify the accuracy of the information provided.
ART. 4 – DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS
Applications must be submitted exclusively in accordance with the procedures outlined on the website https://www.comune.modena.it/summer-school. They must be submitted with the full documentation, specified in Art. 3 above, and be received
BY 12.00 (CET) ON JULY 7th 2025
The full application shall be sent exclusively by e-mail to the certified e-mail address (PEC) progettoeuropa@cert.comune.modena.it. This address must be used for submissions sent from both regular email accounts and certified email accounts. Sending from a regular email account does not guarantee the sender that the recipient has actually received the communication.
The aforementioned documentation must be scanned and attached in PDF format, duly signed where required.
The submission of the application is the sole responsibility of the sender.
Applications received after the aforementioned deadline will not be considered and will result in exclusion from the selection process.
The deadline is final and binding; the date and time of receipt in the certified email inbox indicated above shall be deemed authoritative.
ART. 5 – EVALUATION OF THE APPLICATIONS AND RANKING LIST
Access to the course is limited to a maximum of 30 participants, including 9 graduates of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and at least 5 non-Italian nationals.
The profile of candidates will be evaluated on the grounds of:
- Final graduation grade;
- Pertinence of studies and of the final dissertation (if applicable) to the Summer School's topics;
- Extracurricular activities and publications, if any;
- Cover letter.
The ranking list will be published on https://www.comune.modena.it/summer-school by JULY 14th 2025. This publication serves as official notification to all concerned parties.
ART. 6 – PROCEDURE FOR CANDIDATES ADMITTED TO THE COURSE
Successful applicants will be notified via email by the Secretariat of the Summer School and must confirm their acceptance within 48 hours of receipt of the communication.
Admitted candidates are required to pay a registration fee of €150.00. Payment must be made exclusively through PagoPA, the electronic payment system for Public Administration established by the Agency for Digital Italy (Agenzia per l’Italia Digitale, AgID).
The City of Modena will issue an invoice accompanied by a PagoPA payment slip, which will be sent to the email or certified email (PEC) address provided by the candidate. Payment must be completed by the deadline indicated on the payment slip.
A copy of the payment receipt must be promptly submitted to the following address: progettoeuropa@cert.comune.modena.it. Failure to submit proof of payment will result in exclusion from the Renzo Imbeni Summer School.
In the event of withdrawal following admission to the course, the City of Modena shall not be liable to refund the registration fee.
ART. 7 – ATTENDANCE AND TRAINEESHIP GRANTS
Candidates admitted to the Summer School must attend at least 90% of the activities, or they will be excluded from the final exam for the traineeship grants.
Students shall be granted free accommodation in a facility near the course venue and meals during the Summer School.
Travel costs incurred by the students to reach Modena, as well as any other eventual travel fees, shall remain at their sole expenses.
At the end of the Summer School, two grants will be awarded for a traineeship at the European Parliament in Brussels, which will take place in the first semester of 2026. Each grant will cover the amount of €5,000.00 (including taxes and social security contributions).
As hosting Institution, the European Parliament may require further specific qualifications regarding the traineeship. In particular, the “Secretariat General of the European Parliament's internal rule governing traineeships and study visits”, available on the European Parliament's website, shall apply.
Each grant will be awarded based on the sole and unquestionable evaluation of the Scientific Committee, following an examination to be held during the Summer School. The examination may be conducted in either Italian or English.
Participants who may benefit from other scholarships or mobility grants under European Union programs during the designated traineeship period at the European Parliament wil be excluded from the Summer School grant.
