According to Art. 20 TFEU, anyone who holds the citizenship of an EU Member State is a European citizen. As a Europan citizen, you have the right to vote for the European Parliament. This right can be exercised throughout the EU territory.

EU citizens living in a Member State that is different to the one they hold the citizenship of, can choose between:

  • voting for MEPs for their citizenship country;
  • voting for MEPs of the EU country in which they are currently living.

Double simultaneous vote is banned, even if a person holds multiple citizenships of EU Member States.

Up to now there is no shared European legislation about EU Elections: each State adopts national regulations regarding both the voting system of its citizens who are not living in the national territory and the voting system of other European citizens at its own polling stations.

VOTING IN ITALY

For those who have the citizenship of an EU Member State other than (or different to) Italy, in order to vote for MEPs representing Italy, the Italian legislation (DL 408/1994) requires all the following conditions:

  • Be over 18 years old;
  • Have the RESIDENCE in an Italian city;
  • Register to vote in the electoral rolls.

To apply for registration in the additional electoral rolls of an Italian municipality, it is necessary to send a REQUEST to the Mayor of the municipality of residence.

This request must be sent at least 90 days before the date set for the elections.

In Italy there is no obligation to go to the polls: voting is a civic duty (Art. 48 Const.) therefore missing the voting appointment does not imply a sanction.

If you have already made the registration for the previous European elections, and no change of residence has occurred, it is not necessary to reapply.

In Italy the polling stations will be open Saturday, June 8 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 9 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
